Hello Jordan and welcome to our forum
An SSL certificate is to help enable/facilitate eCommerce transactions on the Internet. It officially tells your customers that you are who you say you are.
It also encrypts all communications on the Web so that it becomes impossible to 'sniff' or to attempt in finding out with a password is or a credit card number is.
One of the most common SSL certificate is of the 128-bit variety but a lot more exist as well.
