Hello
We had the people at Plesk install the control panel on our server for IP 216.47.xxx.xxx and they tell us that port 8443 is closed.
Could you open that port please? Plesk will NOT run unless port 8443 is open on TCP/IP.
Are we behind a firewall? Are there other ports closed on the range of IPs we were assigned? If so, please send us a list that we need to check.
There are a number of basic ports that we need to leave open on the server for it to run normally.
Thanks

Hello,
Your server is not behind a firewall, it's connected directly to the internet.
Also, this is a colocated server, not a managed dedicated server here.
Normally you would have your server administrator handle these types of issues.
I did verify that the server is accepting SSH connections, but we do not have any credentials on file for this machine.
You should be able to log in and make sure that port is not being blocked by ip tables or any other software firewall, other than that there wouldn't be anything else blocking that port.
If there's anything else you need please let us know.
Thanks,

| -after reading the post above, I only have one question: is it safe to run a server without a firewall? I've always believed that firewalls are a system's admin best friend. |

Hi Kamloops
Linux already comes with its own firewall: it's called ip tables. IP Tables really protects the server since it actually 'binds' the various services to the server. If a service isn't binded to it, it simply won't work.
Windows on the other hand is a totally different thing. Yeah it comes with Windows' firewall but it won't do as good a job at protecting the server as Linux does. So what we do here is install Cisco hardware firewalls on all our customer's servers that run Windows. That way they are really protected against many forms of potential attacks from the outside world.
Hope that helps.
